NAASCon 2008 is now accepting workshop submissions!

NAASCon, the National Asian American Student Conference, is proud to announce the third national Asian American student conference to be held on October 17-19, 2008 at Emory University.

The third conference seeks to examine the connections established in the 2006 conference and progress forward. The theme of this year's conference is FROM VISIONS TO ACTIONS: LET'S GET OUR MOVEMENTS GOING. It recognizes the existing movements as well as the need to examine our current visions. As activist Grace Lee Boggs once said, "New situations bring new contradictions, requiring new visions."  We want to acknowledge and recognize the progress that Asian Americans have made in different parts of the country, and at the same time, develop new visions and keep our movements going. How have new developments in our society challenge our strategies in facing existing issues such as immigration, economic disparity, gender and sexuality, education, and campus resources? NAASCon 2008 is eager to provide the space for Asian American student activists to come together and envision a new America.

The conference is comprised of seven tracks: Immigration, Race, and Rights; Economic Justice: Housing, Healthcare and Labor; Gender and Sexuality; Educational Equity; Arts Technology, and Media for Social Change; Campus and Community Organizing; and APA Issues 101. Included in each track is a panel session that will feature skills and best practices tactics from experienced organizers and fellow students from across the nation.

During the conference, there will also be regional caucuses for students to network, present various issues of concern, and initiate advocacy campaigns. We hope you will work with us in creating a national dialogue among the various regions by facilitating workshops and/or participating in panel sessions. Your input and concerns are important to us, because without your voice, a national dialogue would not be able to happen. Attached you will find the overview of the conference and the workshop submission form. All forms should be emailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it no later than June 15, 2008.

Since 2001, NAASCon has been an active APA student political organization with the mission of educating, fostering dialogue, and mobilizing students through proactive campaigns across the country on issues of importance facing the APA community. NAASCon is an organization created by and for the students. The National Board is comprised of students from various Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicities and represents different regions in the United States. Therefore, a goal of NAASCon is to serve as a forum for APA students, organizations, and regional networks to implement campaigns important to their community.

We hope to hear from you and we look forward to working together in strengthening and sustaining each other's campaigns.

Hey Asian America, What’s Goin’ On?

The National Asian American Student Conference (NAASCon) is eager to present their campaign, Hey Asian America, What’s Goin’ On? , in hopes of gaining more insight to Asian Americans’ experiences across the nation. Through your stories, we want to connect students throughout various regions and discover the state of Asian America today.

NAASCon's campaigns such as boycotting Abercrombie & Fitch for their racist apparel to protesting Details Magazine for their stereotypical portrayal of Asian men are some of many that NAASCon has coordinated in the past.

As a National organization, we want to effectively distribute resources and information that would allow us to better recognize movements occurring outside of our respective campuses and communities. Reaching out beyond one’s own bubble can be a fairly difficult task if you are not connected to certain groups, organizations, etc. and it can become quite easy to stay isolated within one’s own campus, community, region, etc.

We realize the power in learning about each others’ stories and how much we have to offer each other through these experiences. This is where you, the students, come in.

DEADLINE: March 1st
LENGTH: 500 – 700 words

Since 2001, the National Asian American Student Conference (NAASCon) has been an active Asian Pacific American (APA) student political organization with the mission of educating, fostering dialogue, and mobilizing students through proactive campaigns across the country on issues of importance facing the APA community. NAASCon strives to achieve its vision through issue advocacy, coalition building, and leadership development.

NAASCon's first national conference at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, November 2004 was an unprecedented meeting of student leaders that reflected the diversity of the APA student community nationwide. To that end, students of different ethnic groups, regions, and types of school systems, came together to network, socialize, empower each other and themselves, perform, dialogue, plan and organize campaigns and projects, and educate each other, to CREATE CHANGE, and to EMPOWER ASIAN AMERICA.
